Sample Body Paragraph (Show and Tell) for
A Lesson Before Dying Essay
Red = SHOW
Blue = TELL
Ernest Gaines reveals how the fear caused by the society of racism in 1940’s Louisiana caused many black men to feel lost and hopeless when Grant reflects on the river running through the quarter where he lives: “I wanted to see nothing but miles and miles of clear blue water, then an island where I could be alone…But the river remained the same, high and muddy, and I started walking again…[and] could go no farther without getting my feet wet” (159). Gaines uses the universal symbol of a river to represent life in this passage. The river runs through the quarter where the black society lives which includes Grant. The river represents life because it is always moving and changing just as life does. This river is muddy and washes over the bank, and Grant cannot help but get his feet wet in the water, symbolizing that the river is his life too. Grant clearly wants to get away from the water, but anywhere he tries to walk, he is forced to walk through the muddy water even though all he wishes for is “miles and miles of clear blue water.” The clear blue water represents understanding because in clear water, one can see everything in front of him and can prepare for it. This clarity removes fear because the root of fear is not knowing or not understanding something. Rather than the clear blue water, Grant is forced to deal with the muddy river where he can see nothing in front of him. The muddy water symbolizes the inability to know or understand; therefore, the response is fear from not only Grant but all of the black society in the quarter. That fear is what continues to paralyze them causing them to be unable to create change thus they remain “stuck” in the racist society that is intent on controlling them through fear and intimidation.
